Story & Lore

A new world that was never supposed to have a name

Subnautica 2 is a fresh story in the same universe as the original — decades of fiction, a corporate evacuation gone wrong, and a planet called Proteus.

You are one of roughly 40,000 colonists in the Pioneer Program, fleeing the spreading Kharaa bacterium aboard the colony ship CICADA. An unplanned phase-gate jump throws the ship into the wrong star system — and it breaks apart over Proteus, an ocean moon in the M05 binary system. You wake up underwater. The broken Cicada Wreck is your first goal — and the thread that unravels why the ship was rerouted, what happened to the other colonists, and what lurks at the planet's core.

Key entities

🌍 Proteus

The ocean moon you crash on — a wholly new ecosystem, not 4546B.

🚢 CICADA

The colony ship (~40,000 colonists, 14-yr voyage), far larger than the Aurora.

🏢 Ostara Corp

The megacorporation behind the evacuation — same giant from the original game.

🦠 The Blight (Kharaa)

The alien pathogen driving the exodus; mutates life and devours settlements.

🧠 Noetic Advisor

CICADA's AI. Why it was so determined to "continue the mission at all costs" is the core mystery.

🌳 World Tree

Titan-class organism bound to the main story, rooted at Proteus' deepest point.

Voices From Beyond (prequel audio drama)

A 5-episode official audio series sets the stage: the original game's hero Riley Robinson is now a public figure; episodes cover the outbreak, the political crisis, the lost colony ship, and the distress call that reveals the phase-gate disaster. Named crew archives include survival expert Rauli "Iso" Isotalo, pilot "Ruby" Erdene, chief diver Zygimantis "Mantis" Tyrvydas, and the much-quoted colony surgeon Sophie "Butcher" Boucher.

Narrative is delivered through environment and audio logs — silent protagonist, fear-driven exploration, story advanced by depth rather than cutscenes.
